Common Rodents in South Florida
Here in South Florida, we are no strangers to many of the same types of rodents that are also commonly found in many other large urban areas throughout the Southern United States. Because of our largely beautiful weather, abundant food and shelter sources, and
House Mice
Mice are typically more common home intruders than rats because of their smaller size that allows them to sneak into homes through smaller entrances. Mice generally only grow to around seven inches in length and are easily identified by their tails that are as long as their head and body combined. They can build their nests in the space between walls, but they are also prolific climbers and will work their way into attics or the space between floors if they can.
Roof Rats
Roof rats are Florida’s most common type of rat. They get their name from their innate climbing skills, which enable them to make their homes in roofs and attics (especially well-insulated ones that they can easily build a nest in. Like many other rodents, these rats are prolific breeders, and a single female can have up to 20 offspring a year. If you suspect you have roof rats, it’s extremely important to have the issue handled as quickly as possible to prevent potential infestation.
Norway Rats
Contrary to their name, Norway rats are believed to be native to the plains of northern China and Mongolia. They spread to Europe, where they then made their way to North America stowed on trade vessels and passenger ships. Today, they are found almost everywhere in the United States and are what many people think of when they think of urban rodents.
Norway rats can grow up to 16 inches in length, making them the biggest rat species commonly found in South Florida. However, due to their large size and lack of climbing ability, these rats are more often found in burrows and usually live in basements, crawlspaces, or other areas at ground level.
